2000 to present: WAL

WAL is my sons and myself, the surname reversed:

Stratus.mp3  Billy Cobham's classic fusion tune, with Adam Law on guitar, Jared Law on drums, and myself on bass with the folded Food Lion matchbook cover pick.

Cool New Way.mp3  Satriani's version of slow blues, performed by Adam Law on guitar, Jared Law on drums, and myself on rhythm guitar and bass.

Lydia's Love Van.mp3 Frank Gambale's open space jam tune, written when he was 17 years old. Jared on drums (also coincidently 17), with Adam on lead guitar and myself on bass.

As I Am (instrumental).mp3  An instrumental version of a Dream Theatre tune. Jared on drums, Adam on lead guitar, and myself on bass and harmony guitars. Get heavy.

Flying.mp3   Adam on lead vocals and lead guitar; Jared on drums. I wrote the song and lyrics, sang harmony and played bass and rhythm guitars

One Day.mp3  Adam wrote the music, did the drum programming and played guitar & bass. I wrote and sang the lyrics

School Days.mp3  Stanley Clarke's classic with Adam on guitars, Jared on drums, and myself on bass.

Going Down.mp3  Done in 2001 after getting psyched by the G3 tour. Adam and myself trading off guitar licks, with Jared on drums and myself on vocals and harmonies. Done on a 4-track analog Tascam cassette tape deck.

2003 - 2005: Roy G Biv

Recordings from the final RGB lineup: Mitch Bordeaux lead vocals; Jay Moore keyboards and vocals, Mike Anderson bass; Stan Booker drums and vocals, and myself on guitar and vocals:

2000: Roy G Biv

The rhythm section from '4 to 1' reappears and lead singer Mitch is found on a music store bulletin board. Mitch Bordeaux lead vocals; Mike Anderson bass; Stan Booker drums and vocals; Jay Moore keyboards and vocals, Jim McCalla guitar and vocals, and myself on guitar and vocals

1998: One Eighty

1997: The Flying Buttresses

Architect co-workers decide to get together for some fun. Jim McCalla bass, guitar and vocals;  Jay Moore keyboards and vocals; Kenny Durrett drums, Ed Mulreany vocals and myself on guitar. No recordings!

1993: The Richmond band with no name

These recordings were made at Mark Langolier's studio up in an office tower on Main Street in Richmond, and are pretty cool. Mark played bass and engineered the recordings; Mike Werne was the drummer. Fun improvising with these guys. The track 'Improvise' is a great exploration, led by Mike's drumming

1989: 4 to 1

These recordings were taken off the PA board at Twisters on Grace Street, in Richmond, VA. Chris Geir, keyboards; Mike Anderson, bass; Stan Booker, drums; myself on guitar. We played the movie 'Koyaniquatsi' behind the band during the show. Some great accidental synchronizations. Special thanks to Win Wright for the use of his amplifiers that nite

1987: 5G

I guess because there were 5 guys in the band we stole Bruford's song title '5G' for a band name. Win Wright, guitar; Mark Langolier, bass; Stan Booker drums; Chris Geir, keyboards; myself on guitar. Am not aware of any recordings of this group.

1981: The Blacksburg band with no name

These recordings were at a house party on Progress Street in Blacksburg, in a vaulted game room where a guy hung two mics overhead. The accomplished guitarist on these recordings is Don Rusic, whom I believe went on to play with the Richmond band 10 - 10. Steve Bolecheck on bass; Jimmy Ball on drums and myself on 2nd guitar.

1980: Zebra

Think these were recorded at Daddy's Money and Kennedy's in Blacksburg. Bill Paris, guitar; Walt Kneis keyboards; Roger Freeman bass; Jim Ball drums; myself on guitar. This was a great band; lots of chemistry and enthusiasm among the members

Stratus.mp3

Spy Medley.mp3  When playing this one at Kennedy's on Halloween night, a group dressed as the bees from Saturday Night Live came dancing through the audience. A great moment

1979: Beached Zebra

These were recorded at Spanky's in Blacksburg. Robert Kindle, guitar; Tony Pope bass; Jimmy Ball drums; myself on guitar. A rabid student crowd, plenty of beer, and too much adrenaline in the band

Freeway Jam.mp3

Suite Golden Dawn.mp3

Our manager.mp3 Brad Fineman makes a public service announcement

1978: Dow Jones and the Industrials

Chameleon.mp3 Star studded WUVT radiothon event, featuring Mike Furey on keyboards, Michael Hedgepeth on guitar, Doug Thompson on trombone, Tony Pope on bass, Wes Crawford on drums and myself on guitar. Great radio DJ host, interviewing the bar patrons

1977: Chasm

Asbury Park jam.mp3

With Robert Kindle on guitar, Curt 'Captain America' on drums, Jim Waters on bass (later played in the punk band The Keen in Blacksburg) and myself on guitar. The oldest recording I have, and pretty darn awful
